First Block of 9
27 Squares began as a way for me to meet the challenge of creating small, affordable works that remained true to my overall painting practice. Created in 2019, the series celebrates the 27 years I had been painting on Keswick Ridge. It follows the Over the Pond Series, four 8 inch squares that I exhibited in the Bologna Little Treasures show that same year. Seen in their entirety, 27 Squares echoes the extreme horizontal format of my early Ridge paintings, hints at my Sicilian heritage and the tile work I did there and foreshadows, Embracing the Square: Love Poems from the Ridge, opening 7 July at the Capitol Theatre Art Gallery in Moncton, NB. Art historically, 27 Squares recalls the iconic structure that framed Modernismβthe gridβand questions its ability to function as a radical art practice todayπ₯ In contemporary art, 27 Squares functions as a rich metaphor for the best-self social media can be, especially Instagram, with its promise of relationship, connection, and loveβ€οΈ
Browsing the grid-like structure you dear viewer, become part of a complex network of interconnection between you, the painting, Keswick Ridge, others who live with some of the Squares, history and me. Thank you!
